The town of Santa Cesarea Terme on the cliff, at sunset

Santa Cesarea Terme

Four sulphur caves beneath the cliff, inside the park that runs from Otranto to Leuca.

The town

A town built around warm water

The sulphur waters of Santa Cesarea have been used for cures since the sixteenth century. The town itself, however, was born in the nineteenth century: that is when it grew into a spa resort and the aristocracy of Lecce built their summer residences here.

The most striking is Villa Sticchi, with its onion domes and horseshoe arches: it was designed by the architect Giuseppe Ruggeri for Baron Giulio Luigi Sticchi.

The water emerges at around thirty degrees, rich in sulphur, iodine and mineral salts.

The spa

Thermal treatments, from May to December

The Terme di Santa Cesarea use sulphurous water and thermal mud for treatments covered by the Italian National Health Service and INAIL: with a prescription from your family doctor or a specialist you are entitled to one cycle of treatments a year. Alongside the treatments there are wellness services and the Piscina Solfurea, carved into the cliff, with water at 28 degrees. Which treatments to follow is up to your doctor; calendar, bookings and prices are on the Terme website.
